Engagement rate formulas

An interaction is a like, a comment, a share or a save. Everything else depends on the base you pick.

  1. By followers

    Interactions / followers × 100
The easiest to get, and the only one available for an account that is not yours.

  2. By reach

    Interactions / people reached × 100
What the people who actually saw the post did.

  3. By views

    Interactions / views × 100
Common for videos, on TikTok or YouTube.

  4. Open rate

    Unique opens / delivered emails × 100
The share of recipients who opened the email.

  5. Click rate

    Unique clicks / delivered emails × 100
The share of recipients who clicked.

  6. Click-to-open rate

    Unique clicks / unique opens × 100
The share of readers who clicked: it judges the content.

Followers, reach or views: three rates for one post

An engagement rate means nothing without its base. On followers, it measures the interest of your whole audience; on reach, the reaction of those who saw the post; on views, the reaction to each display.

Switch the base: the same 782 interactions give three very different rates.

One video, 782 interactions
782 interactions / 4,800 followers16.29%
  • Followers16.29%
  • Reach6.98%
  • Views4.2%

Everyone who follows you, whether they saw the post or not.

Account rate or post rate?

A post’s rate tells you what worked. An account’s rate is the average of its posts over a period: that is the one you compare from month to month. The calculator gives both.

Newsletter engagement

For an email, engagement reads in three rates: open, click and click-to-open, which divides clicks by opens. Click-to-open judges the content; the open rate judges the subject line and the sender.

A community you own

With Learnybox, your students talk in your own community, in the same place as your courses, without depending on a social network’s algorithm. And each email shows its opens and clicks.

My first landscape is done. The sky took me three tries, what do you think?

Frequently asked questions

Another question? Write to us.

How do you calculate an engagement rate?

Add up the interactions of a post (likes, comments, shares, saves), divide by the number of followers, then multiply by 100. 782 interactions for 4,800 followers give 16.29%.

How do you calculate the engagement rate on Instagram?

Same formula: the post’s interactions divided by followers, or by reach if you can see the account’s insights. Average several posts to get the account’s rate.

What is a good engagement rate?

It varies a lot with the size of the account, the format and the industry: small accounts often engage more, in proportion, than large ones. The most useful benchmark is your own rate, post after post, always calculated the same way.

Should I calculate on followers or on reach?

On reach if you have it: it counts the people who saw the post. The rate by followers is the only one possible for an account that is not yours, for instance to pick a partner. Never compare two rates calculated on different bases.

What is the formula for the email open rate?

Unique opens divided by delivered emails, multiplied by 100. Delivered emails are the emails sent minus the bounces.

Why is my open rate so high?

Some mail apps open emails automatically to protect their users’ privacy: those opens inflate the rate. The click rate is more reliable to compare two sends.

How do I increase my engagement rate?

Ask a question that can be answered in one line, post what gets saved (lists, methods, templates), reply to comments within the hour. And compare your posts with each other to see what works for you.

Is the calculator free?

Yes. The calculation is free with no account; the PDF asks for your email once.
